CAS Smart City: Transforming Cities with IoT-based Integrated Solutions

Considering that over 68 percent of the global population will live in cities by the end of 2050, several local governments are reshaping their urban city infrastructure policies, with a special emphasis on smart cities. By utilizing contemporary technologies such as AI, IoT, and ICT, policymakers are attempting to strike an optimum balance between technology and the natural environment. This surge in the development of smart cities is met with a myriad of design, development, and management challenges.

The collaboration of various departments across different verticals complicates the overall construction process, adversely impacting the overall efficiency of a project. Moving the needle here is CAS Smartcity. The China-based company comprises technical experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and offers top-notch smart city solutions and services to private entities and local governments. CAS Smart City was incubated and established by the Guangzhou Institute of Software Application Technology. Headquartered in Nansha, Guangzhou, the company has several branches across China and is committed to researching and developing industrialized products. CAS Smart City coalesces the expertise of many technological wizards from the national ministries and commissions, state councils, the US, Europe, Japan, and Singapore. Owing to its expertise in the domain and offerings, CAS Smart City has won numerous global and regional accolades, including Barcelona World Smart City Award in the innovation category. It has installed thousands of its smart city solutions across the globe, enabling local governments to ensure safety and security in their cities. In collaboration with Guangdong Urban IoT Engineering & Technology Research Center and Guangdong Smart Lighting Engineering & Technology Research Center, CAS Smart City owns over forty IPs.
The company is one of the first in APAC to bring about the concept of ‘street-light IoT,’ where IoT sensors are used in lamp posts in integration with other IoT infrastructures, transforming urban spaces into smart cities. “When it comes to the lighting industry and smart city infrastructure, the most important starting point is the smart lighting pole. The smart lighting pole will undergo a series of evolutions alongside the development of smart cities and 5G technology,” says Dr. Feng Yuan, Director of CAS Smart City.

By integrating poles, power lines, IT networks, and IoT platforms, CAS Smart City has built a smart city IoT and big data management platform that collects massive, multi-sources, and heterogeneous IoT big data. Via the platform, users can manage multiple IoT devices spread across a city and coordinate a multitude of applications. The platform also offers intelligent configurations and flexible triggers, automated problem diagnostics and reports, timeline backtracking, visualized management, and data analytical capabilities, making it a one-stop solution for smart city development and management. Vehicle detection, light-sense control, and automatic brightness adjustment are some of the core modules that empower a city to become more power-efficient. In addition to these, CAS Smart City has also integrated smart EV charging, intelligent navigation, charging spot reservation, and payment modules, making travel easy, sustainable, and affordable for the local residents of a smart city. In the near future, CAS Smart City will adorn the platform with intelligent management and operations functionalities, transforming it into a ‘city brain’ from where local authorities can oversee the performance and activity of each device.

When it comes to the lighting industry and smart city infrastructure, the most important starting point is the smart lighting pole

Considering that the Chinese smart city market is experiencing exponential growth in the past few years, with over 500 existing smart city projects, CAS Smart City’s role in offering smart solutions to the local authorities will be a critical driver for the success of the country’s smart city policies. With the mission to improve the efficiency of urban services and make urban life better, the company has collaborated with Sensity Systems, a provider of energy-efficient LED lighting systems. “CAS Smart City and Sensity will leverage their respective strengths to create significant value, not only for the two organizations involved, but also for the customers, distributors, OEMs and other agents throughout China,” says Dr. Feng.
