Advanced Mobility Analytics Group (AMAG): Reimagining Transport Analytics World Wide

,Dr. Simon Washington, Co-Founder & CEO, Advanced Mobility Analytics Group (AMAG)Dr. Simon Washington, Co-Founder & CEO
The adoption of 'smart cities' as the future of urbanization is rapidly gaining momentum around the globe. Today, government departments are designing smart cities with modern highways and roads featuring advanced technologies and smart road user management systems. Despite such advancements, there remain thorny issues associated with road user safety, equity, and transportation system efficiency due to rising populations and increasing diversity of road users, such as e-bikes and e-scooters. To address these challenges, numerous countries are looking for reliable partners that can provide reliable, accurate, and timely analytics and insights for decision making across transportation management, operations, and planning contexts.

"SMART will help governments to manage, maintain, and operate transport systems comprehensively, build internal capacity, and continually be upgraded to reflect customer feedback"

Enter Advanced Mobility Analytics Group (AMAG).
Having designed and built a groundbreaking SaaS analytics and insights platform using 100% road user sampling from video and LiDAR data sources, AMAG is enabling governments around the world to make evidence-based decisions to deliver safer and more efficient transportation networks. The AI-powered Safe Mobility Alert Real Time (SMART) Platform empowers transportation managers, planners, and operators with a suite of inter-connected and complementary products to monitor, manage, and mitigate undesirable outcomes associated with providing mobility. "Our platform is not only focused on vehicles, but also assesses both the usage and risks of vulnerable road users, including increasingly diverse users such as motorized bikes, scooters, and skateboarders," says Simon Washington, co-founder and CEO of AMAG.

Capitalizing on the latest advances in computer vision, high precision LiDAR data, AI and machine learning, and advanced econometric models, AMAG is changing the current traffic management, operations, and planning paradigms by integrating detailed insights into road user operations and risk across traditionally disconnected departments. How road users utilize the transport network, and what risks they face is integrated across SMART Safety, Operations, and Survey products. Using SMART products, operators and planners becomeintimately aware of road user risk, while safety managers become aware of operational efficiency.

The company's SaaS-based platform, SMART, is designed by Transport Engineers for Transport Engineers as a capacity-building tool for governments.
With more than 70+ years in Transport Engineering among the co-founders, and collectively more than 500 technical papers written on road user safety, operations, and planning, AMAG’s SMART is uniquely tailored to the profession. “Unlike a number of companies founded by technologists looking for an application of their technology, we understand customer problems first, and use technology that is appropriate to solve these problems” says Washington. “I want to get my back surgery from the surgeon, not the innovator who invented the x-ray machine”. Focusing on customer is and shall remain a core focus of AMAG, with enhancements to the SaaS being driven by customer feedback.

AMAG's SMART platform currently consists of 5 products, two of which are under development. The products currently being used by customers include the SMART Operations product, the SMART Safety product, and the SMART Survey product. SMART Operations is a continuous, real-time tool for managing the minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour, week-by-week operations of a site, both with respect to risk and safety, as well as operational efficiency. SMART OPS uses AI to monitor a video stream and alert an operator when flows, speeds, violations, near-misses, or unusual events occur at a site. To complement OPS, the SMARTY Safety is utilized to conduct deep diagnostic analysis to assess risks, to perform safety benchmarking across sites, to do before-after evaluations of treatments, and to identify potential safety countermeasures. SMART Safety uses post-processed video analytics to generate traffic insights in weeks instead of months or years, passing timely and accurate information for governments to effectively mitigate risks before they occur. The SMART Survey product supports many other activities like how to plan a region for future growth in the suburbs, to calibrate travel demand models, to support intersection modelling, and to support speed management programs. The platform also helps to answer and give insights to some of the government's pressing questions, such as where should money be invested to yield the biggest and most positive impact on road users.

We built our company around prediction algorithm to make a global difference in the livability of cities, making them safer and more efficient by scaling and using advanced technologies that we developed ourselves

With such unparalleled capabilities, AMAG has numerous customer success stories. For one client the safety impacts of leading pedestrian intervals (LPI) were assessed across a number of trail locations, with results showing a 40% reduction in pedestrian crash risk. For another customer AMAG used SMART to assess the impact on sideswipe and rear-end crash potential at a complex freeway merge at two locations, with a 60% reduction in crash risk demonstrated. A third client wanted to improve crash risk for bicyclists at a roundabout, and SMART allowed the customer to verify that their improvements in fact led to a 77% reduction in bicycle crash risk. Previously, these clients would have required years to collect sufficient crash data to study the efficacy of their treatments with certainty. However, AMAG's Smart platform enabled these customers to evaluate the safety impact of the treatment with just one week of data before and after implementation, and importantly, minimized road user injuries in the process.

AMAG is bullish about future growth and its products, with discussions for deployments with governments across 6 countries currently. "We're building analytics and insights products and dashboards with the scalability that only a true SaaS company can deliver.” “SMART will help governments to manage, maintain, and operate transport systems comprehensively, build internal capacity, and continually be upgraded to reflect customer feedback.” We are preparing to implement SMART across the world," concludes Washington, “and off to a really great start”.
